go play it, if you think its good go for it. But there is definitly other amps that would cost you the same price and sound better. As far as opinions on the AVT series, its not very good compared to other marshalls. Actually, its horrid compared to other marshalls.

Marshall's AVT line is pretty much a gigantic ripoff, Most hybrids are. (except Vox's) They're very overpriced and don't deliver much soundwise. It's an allright amp, but very expensive. It really doesn't compare to the other Marshalls.

Edit: Which AVT where you planning on getting? They come in different wattages, which means different price range. Tell me the model or price range and I can help more.

sorry for double post but i was thinking of getting the combo AVT100X or AVT150X. I don't really know if i would need the extra 50 watts.

I'd go with the Marshall JCM 800, much like everybody else said. You could probably find a used combo for the price of the AVT. The 50 Watt combo version will sound almost as loud as that 150 Watt AVT.

I got an old Valvestate combo (forerunner of AVTs) and I like it a lot, as it has a good tone imo, but a few years from now I'll probably get an all-tube Marshall.

MARSHALLS ROCK!!

EDIT: I have a friend who uses and AVT100 and it sounds great! And he's actually in a band (the band is Radio Messiah, a kickass band, imo).

AVT's are slightly better than MG's, but still absolutely terrible.

For the same price you can get a decent valve combo, don't just get an AVT because it's a "Marshall", because it's not a real, valve Marshall.

Get him into blues. Lyrical depth-not so much. But it is groovy and it is black people's music so if he doesn't enjoy then he is not a true black person.

^Lol

Good one.

He can buy a tube marshall, he has enough money. No reason to buy a practice amp when you get a killer amp.
