everywhere i look (music related) i see this kind of thing:

characterstic chord progression: I-Iv
or
the chorus uses I-II-V......

im sure its is the basics but could you explain?

It's just roman numerals depicted the chord of the key...

i.e - -- - - vi = sixth degree or chord of scale (minor)
I = 1st degree or chord of scale (major)

Pretty much lower case roman numerals are minor, capitalized numerals are major.

So---- I-iii-IV-V

that's just 1 - 3 - 4 - 5
in the key of C Major that would be ------> C-Em-F-G
