Any pain is a sign to stop, relax a bit, and then get going again. If you continue through it, you could potentially cause more problems.

shoulder pains sounds a bit weird.... how do you manage that? the picking should come from the wrist.

you probably strain your shoulder when you're trying to hold your palm down on the strings. This could be a number fof reason, either you flex your back muscles or maybe your arteries a clogged more than the new Jersey turnpike, and this is early signs of heart problems. I don't know, i'm not a doctor.

You should be using your wrist, probably tensing up your shoulder without thinking about it.. If your standing up when you get them, try sitting down and playing the same riff, see if it hurts.
