I had a $75 trade-in value at Guitar Center so I decided to pick up those Planet Waves Auto-Trim Locking Tuners. (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Planet-Waves-Auto-Trim-Tuning-Machines-6-InLine?sku=361450

Well they were the worst things I've ever put on my guitar. They broke 4 strings while I tried to tune my guitar (and I wasnt over-winding... not even close). It seems that little thing inside that "auto-trims" also winds up snapping the string half the time. Plus the black tuning pegs look awful compared to classic chrome ones, and it takes away from that Strat mojo.

Today I'm taking them off my guitar, bringing them back to GC, and demanding they give me a check for my $75 trade-in value. The store manager there is a little push-over, so I know it wont be a problem.

But now I need some new ones that will keep my Strat in perfect tune. Even if I decide to mess around with the whammy bar a bit (not for dive bombing, just for "chord shimmering"... think Lenny by SRV)

I was thinking about these:

Nothing but great reviews on MF.com and they seem like a perfect replacment. Anyone have any expirience with them?

All you need is a proper setup and your Strat should pretty much stay in tune all the time when using the whammy. I just got a Highway One and I set it up, now it stays in tune even with crazy whammy use.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but are they really chrome? It kinda seems like theyre painted gray, and not really chrome. I know that would bug the hell out of me everytime I picked up the axe...

i understand that schaller are reliable locking tuners
but Sperzel locking tuners are superb, and im not over glorifying it either
on my guitar , once i restring and tune up, my tuning was rock stable and i didnt need to retune for almost a month! (and i check everyday before i started to play)
so if they're within ur price range, i highly reccomend sperzel locking tuners. plus i believe they're easier to use as well.

I was looking at these http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sperzel-6-InLine-Locking-Tuners?sku=361009

..because they look like real gold/chrome, when the Schaller looks like they were painted gray.

^^ Convience I suppose. They were the only locking tuners in the store, and after spending an uneccessary 1 1/2 hours finalizing a trade-in with the super retarded sales clerk I just wanted to get the f*ck outta there. Wasnt really thinking I guess...
