i would say if you dont plan on doing gigs or any shows in the near future to buy a nice, small practice amp and spend the rest on a better quality bass guitar.

Very true. If you arn't planning on joining a band, you won't need an expensive amp.

Plus, if this is your first bass, dont spend $1000 on a bass. If you get bored with it, you are going to have this great instrument lying around that you will have to give to me

Find out if you like the instrument first, and then spend $1000 on one. The best thing for you to do is to go to a music store and play every bass within your pricerange. Find the one that plays the best, and fool around with it for a while. If you are going to be playing for a long time, get an expensive one. If you just want to try bass out, get an SX from http://www.rondomusic.com

I would probably suggest a Gallien-Krueger half stack, and a Fender Geddy Lee signature bass.

The Geddy Lee is extremely diverse tonally, and it has a great feel to it. It goes for $700.

For the amp, I suggest a Gallien-Kreuger 1001RB-II. It goes for $750, but I have a site that will sells it for $600 (the same price as the 700RB-II). Send me a PM for the site. (they don't like people giving out their quotes) As for a cab, go with an Avatar ( http://www.avatarspeakers.com ). Preferably an Avatar Neo 2x12. Extremely nice cab for the price.

The ending price is a little over your budget, but you can always get a smaller amp if you need (preferably a G-K either 4001-RB combo or a 700-RB combo).
