Whats some good alternative country, preferably something with a liberal edge. So far the only country stuff ive found that i really like is Johnny Cash but I like lots of the elements of some country and im looking for some non toby keith/ garth brooks stuff because to me that is crap. Also I like Neil Young
I'm a rockstar without the skills, fame, or income.

Try searching wikipedia for some 'alt country' there is a big list there. Some people describe some of Bright Eyes stuff as that.

Mermaid Avenue Vol. 1 & 2 by Billy Bragg & Wilco are great albums. They've taken unreleased Woody Guthrie lyrics and put music to them. Uncle Tupelo is very good as well.

i've never really considered wilco to be alt-country

either way, neko case is amazing stuff. beautiful voice

Wilco's early stuff is definitely Alt-Country. Even the track "I'm the Man Who Loves You" off of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is Alt-Country. Anyways Neko Case and Jason Collet t are both Alt-Country, as is the Bright Eyes album "I'm Wide Awake it's Morning."

Gillian Welch is awesome. She has the best guitarist in David Rawlings. Check out her DVD for Revelator. His playing is beyond awesome.

Well, if you like Johnny Cash, maybe try some Hank Williams Jr, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, George Jones, ya know, some good old school country.

I agree, I heard Shooter Jennings and the .357s open for Skynyrd over summer, they sounded awesome on songs like Electric Rodeo and Gone to Carolina and stuff.

Rank & File are great. Alejandro Escovedo can really write a song, although I like him with the Nuns even more.
