Whenever i try to tap i just get a very very quiet sound. And ive been wondering if my equipment has something to do with it or not. Do u have to have a good guitar to be able to tap?

Use distortion, tap hard, and, when pulling off the tap, use proper pulling off technique, kind of pulling your finger down, like you should normally do when.

Keep practicing and remember to hammer on the notes hard. It might take a while to ge it to sound right, but its pretty simple once you know what your doing. You dont need a good guitar/amp to get a good tapping sound.
