Probably either the 72 Tele, or the Cyclone. You could also concievably buy a standard strat and pop some Seymour's in it. That would give you a tremendous range of playable music.

I want a lot of sounds out of it. Anywhere from bright and springy to warm and soft, to crunchy and mean. That's why I'm looking for versatility.

If it will help, I play a lot of stuff like Pink Floyd, The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In, etc. Basically, a lot of prog-rock. I also play some punk here and there (The Clash and similar).

Also, I'm very aware that a Fat Strat would be the most versatile guitar ever, not just with Fenders, but everyone, their brother, and their dog has a Strat. I want to be a bit different from the crowd.

Well, I occasionally throw a lot of distortion on...so a semi-hollow isn't really for me.

A lot of people are saying to go with the 72 Tele - Are the wide-range humbuckers it has really that much more versatile than regular humbuckers? Do they sound a lot different?

I would say the nashville. You will never be able to get actual *tele* sounds (i.e twang) out of a humbucker. I can get a close hb approximation on my nashville, or you could always throw a stacked single into one of the positions. Yeah, Nashville ftw.

am i the only one who hates how cyclones and mustangs and jags and jazzmaters look like? i would say the first cyclone is the most versatile out of those. it has a humbucker for distortion and a single coil for cleans.

Nashville form those probably, you get the tele hard twang and the strat versatility with the extra pup.

'72 Deluxe Teles are great, but try all them guitars out first.

I concur, I have a Tele with 2 humbuckers and I get some great twang out of it.
