to mute just lay one of your fret hand fingers lightly on the string you want to mute ... light enough so the sring doesn't get pushed to the fretboard, but hard enough so that it doesn't ring at all

to plam mute, you lay your pick hand lightly on the strings just on front of the bridge while you pick

The term "palm mute" is a slight misconception, as you don't actually use yor palm to the muting (as that would be very inconvenient).

Just slightly place the edge of your picking hand against the strings and you'll get it. Remember, to get a "louder" mute, mute the strings by the bridge, and to get a softer mute, mute away from the bridge, but not so far out.

And just to avoid confusion, what Foo Fighter said isn't wrong, but the thing he was saying about the frets, that' actually muffling the string.

Hope I helped!

Well first of all, that would be a palm muting (PM). Make sure that when u do it this way that u keep your palm as close to the bridge as you can and play. You can also lightly touch the strings with your fretting hand to mute.
