Is there anyone that has a lot of experience as an lead guitar player on an acoustic? and if there is how do you start out and how do you practice without another guitar player around?

Just messing around is what I am doing and everytime I'm playing w/someone else it doesn't work out very well.

Are there scales to learn?
Where do I look to learn about what scales go in what key?
I've seen people capo their guitars to be in tune with someone elses, how does that work?
