against what almost everyone has told me on here, i've decided to (when i get the money) buy a mixer instead of an interface for the studio that will be complete in about a year. its basicly what you get for the price that made me decide on getting a mixer. i have this peavy in mind, its got 10 mic inputs (which is about what i would need to record whole bands at once), could someone check it out for me and tell me if it would work pretty good for rather serious recordings? thanks http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-PV14-Mixer?sku=631369

My uncle has a mixer that is an interface. It has firewire capabilities and comes with its own software. I beleave its a yamaha but you basically just plug it into ur comp and record that way. It can also double up as a midi controller.
