Is this the best head for it's price? My budget is around $1000 down. The music I like is Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Testament, Metal Church, Venom, Diamond Head, Slayer, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and pretty much anything.

there's absolutely no reason you need a halfstack. besides, the one you picked isn't very high gain. for your price, you could get a used tube combo, or even head/halfstack, which would suit you much better.

and do a search next time; there are a million of these threads.

Cheap amps are "that bad". They suck up your tone like cocaine at Kate Moss' party.

You'd need a pedal with it^, it can't get that much gain by iteself.

Look at amps made for metal and hard rock, maybe something like a used Peavey JSX or 5150.

I think that a Peavey JSX sounds like it would be great for that kind of stuff. You can get them new for around $1200-1300.

Aren't JSXs more low gain style?

No. Look into the Mesa F-50 combo or the JSX.
