Ok, I wasn't sure where to put this, and I did use the search feature.
Anyways, I was wondering what theory, scales, etc. I will need to learn for alternate rock. Any help is appreciated

That's a really wide category, but I'd say a common thread is know your open and barre chords, know how to use pulloffs and sus's in chord progressions, pentatonics, blues, major, and natural minor (aeolian mode) for solos and riffs. And know your way around dynamics and using feedback.

What bands are you talking about? Cause I sort of based that answer off Dinosaur Jr.

Not sure. A friend asked me if I'd be willing to join a band sometime, I asked what type, she said alt rock, doesn't really have anymore direction than that.
