I was thinking about this earlier. Drummers obviously have different playing styles...so which drummers do you like, what's their typical sound, and why?

For me, Flo Mounier and Tomas Corn from Cryptopsy and Lykathea Aflame, respectively. Lots of mixing blast beats with jazzy bits and intricate ride/crash work. They're all over the kit, but it doesn't always sound brutal, although they certainly have the capability. Adds a huge degree of variety to the music for me. Probably my favorite style of playing.

Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Martin Lopez (Opeth), I find, also have a lot in common. Alone they would be great drummers, but they both have a groove that fits (or in Lopez's case, used to fit) with the rest of the band.

And for purely speed-based reasons, Derek Roddy and Tony Laureno. Both are just stupidly fast.

Lopez's stuff with Amon Amarth is pretty good.

If there is anything I hate in metal its stale or lameass drumming. Something thats been done a thousand times is terrible. Latin and jazzy influences are really pretty kick ass, though. Flo is probably one of my favorite drummers up there with Lopez, Kollias and Pitruzzella.

Speed wise I think one up and coming drummer is Marco Pitruzzella. He is beyond tight on the kit. Roddy is a good drummer but a jackass, so its kind of a toss up between the two.

i've always been a fan of joey jordinson, though he's super-overrated. right now, i like the drummer from mortal treason. he rocks.
#4
Steve Flynn, and the dude from Municipal Waste.

Because they're all over the place, yet still manage to keep it tight.

Neither Slipknot nor Mortal Treason are metal. Slipknot is nu-metal; Mortal Treason is deathcore, which is a subgenre of hardcore/metalcore. Please post in the appropriate forum, thanks.

Honestly, JFAC had a thread here before they were labeled deathcore, and everybody liked them.

Grindcore and Thrash Crossover have just as much, if not more hardcore influence.
#9
i seriosly think for his time bonham the drummer for led zep was amzing, he played wierd beats that were'nt all in 4-4 time. like in the ocean and black dog he plays off rythm beats and still keeps it tight. personally in my opinion hes one the best drummers. at least for his time
#11
Ken Owen of Carcass, because his drumming is all over the place and really unique. Also Tony Laureano (ex Nile) - some crazy **** from this guy. he can go all crazy fast and super slow, really versatile + his blast beats are teh sh1t.
#12
I like Amon Amarth's current drummer (I can never remember his name ). He has a really catchy style and fits with the music perfectly, which is important to me. I like insanity, but I'll take this guy over Mounier or Kollias any day.

I agree with that.

As for drummers.........Frost, Fenriz, Bard Faust, for DM - Flo, Pete Sandoval, Steve Asheim (sp?), thats all i can think of right now.

I'd agree with you on that point, but Mortal Treason isn't metal. It's not deathcore either - it's BM-influenced metalcore.

Hmm I'm a fan of Martin Lopez, Mike Portnoy, Daniel Liljekvist, Ed Warby, well not metal Neil Peart and Danny Carey as well.

Mortal Treason? the band with the BMX pro guy Seth Kimbrough on vocals? Theyre a christian hardcore band....

anyways, whoever did drums on Dechristianize has skills.

i love a lot of the guys mentioned already, Owens, Kollias, etc, (Danny Carey, even tho Tool arent metal, is a god), but one that hasnt been mentioned yet is Van Williams from Nevermore. i love his drumming, especially some of his tomwork. another kickass drummer.

I love stuff that includes nuancing the playing with crashes, ride, ride-bell and stuff. Makes it alot more interesting. But then again, I love it when they just do double kick and maul gravity-blast and top it of with riding on the china, it makes a wall of sound that owns you and melts your face.
#21
Sean Reinert from Cynic, Steve Flynn from Atheist and Ken Owen from Carcass are my main favourite drummers. I also quite like Nick Menza's style because even if it isn't the most technical style it accompanies Megadeth's music perfectly (IMHO). I like Donald Tardy as well.

Man, if only we could have a thread dedicated to recommendations, that would be sweet. Maybe, we could call it ... The Hugfest .... no, that's no good? Metal-O-Rama? Nah.... oh wait.

Mark Prator from the Iced Earth Alive in Athens CD is pretty damn good I think thats his name, Mike Portnoy is my favorite by far, and Martin Lopez is awesome too bad he left Opeth I hope the new one is good, and the fella from Dragonforce is just stupidly fast just like the rest of the band so hes pretty cool

^It is Mark Prator, he's done a few albums with Iced Earth such as Some Wicked This Way Comes, which also has some great drumming on it. I'm with Bilzzard of Ozz as far as adding little extra bits to a solid beat, but I am a very big fan of the classic double bass and high-hat rhythm with the slower off-beat snare as the basic fast style. And then there is the alternating type bass drum (triplets or Mike Pornoy style off-beats and the George Kollias "very fast double bass rhythm and even fast triplet bass drum fills ) and cymbal/ride/crash fills, my favourite example of this is Richard Christy's work with Iced Earth on "Horror Show" (listen to Im-Ho-Tep).
#24
Ya Iced Earth haven't ever really had a bad drummer but I wish they could keep a solid band together for more than 1 CD

i think martin lopez has to be one of the best drummers in metal. he can do all the brutal double bass, but yet he makes it so tasteful with the latin influences. i havent really heard anyone as exciting to listen to in metal.

I practically worship Charlie Benante's work on drums. I haven't heard a lot of bands with drums that fit so well, with so much power, and he keeps it interesting too.
Oh, and I always mention him when it comes to drummers: Ventor. The guy is a beast!
Dyer's Eve is awesome, and has an abnormally large penis, which doesn't act as any hinderance to his everyday life despite its freakishly large size.

My favourite drummer and his style is probably Flo Mounier. Especially because of his jazzy...ness.
#30
I agree with the jazzy crashes making everything thing alot more interesting, and I just plain like it when anything is rediculously fast. The drummer from Neuraxis is an absolute maniac.

I realize I'm in the metal forum, and might get bitten. . .

But. . . Maureen tucker from the velvet underground was amazing. She played standing up, with mallets, and no cymbals. . .

I love bill ward's style his fill sare godly at points. Symptom of the Universe, Fairy Wear Boots a million others=

Ive always been a fan of Charlie Benante's I love how he knows exactly when the double bass fits unlike a lot of other thrash drummers that either never use it or overyse it.

i usually like you, LedZeppelin, but come on. slipknot not being metal i can deal with, but deathcore? thats the lamest excuse for a 'genre' ive ever heard. im gonna use logic here, and my ears. it sounds more like Nile then Killswitch Engage, so im leaning more towards metal. and if it had 'death' in its genre name, im guessing its a death offshoot with 'core' influences. its still metal.
once again, i usually like you, but this is just screaming elitism.

black metal influences metalcore. sounds metal to me.

why the hell is everyone so specific? all these gay ass hybrid genres suck.

Deathcore is a genre. Bands like All Shall Perish, TTEOTD, JFAC, and many many others.

I really dig the jazzy players, guys who seem to have like 18 arms with the amount of fills they do. Some people think its excessive and dumb or whatever, but I think it kicks ass. I'm mainly talking about Brann Dailor and Flo Mournier, my two favourite drummers, they're just all over the place.
#38
What band is Dailor in? I remember hearing about him somewhere.

edit: MASTODON! I remembered. Yeah, he's great.
