Here's a short list of guitarists that I would be interested in knowing what gauge strings they use...

+ John Frusciante (RHCP)
+ Jack White (The White Stripes)
+ Josh Homme (QOTSA)
+ Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother)

AND here's a short list you might (that's MIGHT) wanna know concerning other pro guitarists and their string gauges...

+ Omar...<spanish name?> of The Mars Volta uses .013 Jazz D'Addario
+ Jonny Greenwood & other Radiohead guitarist use .010
+ Albert & Nick of The Strokes use .012
+ Troy Van <weird name?> of QOTSA uses .011, .012 with a high action, sometimes even .013

WELL there you have it: 4 pretty useless tidbits of information in return for any string gauges of the listed guys you might know...

Troy van Leeuwen. It's a Dutch surname. Leeuwen means lions. The dude from The Mars Volta 's called Omar Rodriguez.

oh yeah? well larry king the slayer guitarist owns bc rich guitars. (i think)

It's pretty stupid trying to copy Omar's equipment / strings / whatever - he has so many different effects I reckon only he can imitate his own sound!

Sheesh...just do the "edit thread" dropdown option, you silly n00b.

It looks like Biles stuck it and then moved it and it stayed stuck? Then it says you deleted and undeleted it?

I use 10s on my Les Paul at the moment, I'm wondering whether to get some 11s when I replace my strings next. Especially after seeing Nick and Albert from The Strokes use 12s.

Would I have to adjust the truss rod if i did change, and what're the advantages and disads for changing from 10s to 11s?

Yeah.

I did work out who stuck it, hence the delete/restore under my name. I was more concerned about why it was stickied.

Oh and I'm going to unstick this now.

Iommi used custom gauges.

He definately used 0.08's cause he lost tips of his fingers

I used 9-46, thin for bends, slightly heavier chunk lower down
#25
I use that Hammet gauge as well.... Very twangy though
Tone is all ...... well probably 75%, in your fingers.
The rest depends on your wallet's thickness !!

Keep the faith, baby!!

No idea, but John Frusciante uses D'addario EXL110's and EXL115's

Yep, but when he uses EXL110's he uses an 11 gauge string for the high E instead of a 10.

Really, there is no point in knowing their string gauge, you won't get their tone, most of the tone comes from the amp, they have the money to afford all the amps they want, so they can play with .007s and still have a fatter sound than bass strings.

So it's no point.
#28
tone comes from fingers. 'nuff said.
