well ive been playing for quite a while, learnt a coule of scales however the problem i how would someone know what scale to use o fit the chords??? would you have to train your ears first so that ull be able to recognise the chords first and wouldnt that be very difficult for solo begginers???

to find the key of a song you should look at either the last or first chord. then say it was A you would use a scale in the key of A.

most of the posts above contain too many generalizations and aren't supported by any examples or anything, the first link has a good explanation of improvisation, while the other two are lessons on modes and usage
