A slide is a small metal pipe that people put on their fingering hand. Here's what one looks like:

Usually assosiated with Country, the slide has been used by many rock bands aswell. Listen to Led Zeppelin's In My Time Of Dying for an amazing pyschodelic slide jam.
WHY IS EVERYONE IN THE PIT A FUCKING METALCORE KID

Dead easy - you pop it over a finger and rest it vertically against the strings, making sure it's in line with the frets. Then, instead of fretting behind a note like you normally would, rest the slide directly over it. You don't press down, just rest it lightly against the string. Then when you play a note you can slide up or down the neck.

Slides work best with a high action and heavy strings - generally you'd tune your guitar to an chord like open D or G.
