Depends what kind of Death Metal you want. Slayer uses Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb (low to high on all) The lowest I'd advise is C G C F A D. Then in the middle is D G C F A D and of course D A D G B E. Anymore questions just ask me or someone else I guess. I don't really know what you mean by pitch hope I nailed your questions though.

Just tune to whatever you feel like. Ex: Pantera went from a standard E to a standard Db and dropped B. Dimmu-borgir started with E, are now in Eb and have the occasional lower tunings.
Me, I play metal and I started E and I'm now in Db, but I was considering going back up to D or Eb because I think that sound tighter.
Just remember, as you go lower, you'll need thicker strings (heavier gauge) or your strings will become very floppy and not have enough tension.

DGCFAD is my favorite tuning. It's got a darker, heavier sound but like the strings arent all loose and flopping everywhere(unless you play with fishing line.)

Swisgarr tunes down a whole step I think. DETHKLOK RULES!

Actually it's tuned down to C not D. At least that's the way the theme song is.

There is no set tuning for death metal, use what ever you want. Some bands like Atheist use standard and some use drop A. So its pretty much what sounds good to you.
#18
Please don't use anything below Dropped C though...Dropped B, Dropped A, or lower, way too low lol.

Lol...Drop Satan.

^True.
Just use what you want

Try finding out what the tunings of your favorite artists are, that should help. Also, don't listen to the non-death metal heads that think that you can't tune lower then D or C (hint: use thick strings).

I use drop Satan most of the time. Pretty versitile if you ask me.
#26
I use either D standard (DGCFAD), sometimes drop to drop C (CGCFAD), or I use a mastodon tuning AGCFAD yay!
#27
D standerd. (one step down) is what i use, but ocasiounly i tune my high e-string down another half step to C# and i get this wierd chordal quality i like.
I was here for a while.

Then I was gone.

Now I'm back cause Obama.

Dont go as low as A unless you own a 7 string..It sounds like crap IMO. I think C standard or Drop C gives you enough downtuning to make it crunchy and dark, while also not making the strings feel like rubber. And yes bigger string sizes will help but, these two tunings I find are the best for black and death metal type stuff. Especially if you want to play fast
#29
^But the B and lower tuning sounds so cool with a lot of gain. It sounds cool period, actually.
#32
Acctually i take back my previous statement, I use B but Boris use G. They win. so therefore G standard FTW!!!

(Also Altar, the Sunn O))) and Boris album, kicks ****ing ass)

That doesn't even make any sense. How can a tuning be melodic?

i meant while it sounds way heavier than normal tunings you can still get a good melodic sound that you wouldnt think youd get with youre strings that low, ie it all may sound muddy or too loose,

for death, b standard.

Or if you want to do something different, try A# standard (what i have on one of mine)
YOU NEED SOME THICK STRINGS FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
(.13's-70's hybrid set for me)
