hey... i've been playing guitar for about 4 years, and i want to pick up a cheap-ish bass. i know absolutely nothing about basses. i'm looking to play RHCP, rage against the machine, and any other sort of funky bass stuff like that. any suggestions are welcome. as for a budget, i'm looking to spend under $300 for a bass and amp, but i'm willing to buy used equipment, which should lower the price. thanks.

well for 300$, you are going to get extremely cheap gear, but you already knew that. So try looking in pawn shops, they usually have cheap guitars in there. You MIGHT be able to find a cheap squier......and I mean cheap. But yea, pawn shops are probably the only place you can find what you need for 300, it will get you started of on bass, try it for a while to see if you like enough to get better gear.

cool. i was looking at ibanez basses. i saw a few at guitar center used for about 200-250... don't really know what kind they are though. here's a good question- should i assume ibanez is better than squier, overall? i know with guitars it depends on the model, but like i said... i know nothing about basses. thx

^ Ibanez is a waaaaaaaaay better than any Squier.

I am going to have to disagree... and i highly doubt most the people that say anything about subjects like this have no personaly experience with both of them. But i have played both lower end Ibanez and Squier and i have found that the Squier had better QC in general.

Umm i know you're done with basses but can i bring in another brand--SX.For me,it
sounds quite nice.

SX are great value products, if you live in the US, definately give em a look, plus you're getting stuff for new.

Also check Craigslist.com for listings, its great for used musical equipment.
