why does everyone say that Hendrix is a sloppy guitar player? i'm listening to First Rays of the New Rising Sun and have yet to hear sloppy guitar playing. the only album i have found that he did play sloppy was his performance at Woodstock. there's nothing even remotely sloppy on Axis and AYE? and we could argue a bit about Ladyland but there's nothing that bad or obvious.

so i guess i can just conclude that i don't find Hendrix to be sloppy, that i'm sick of people that exaggerate "lIeK OmG I nEEd AsPirIN WhEN i LisTEn 2 HenDRIckS!!!R#" and if you're going to call him a sloppy player, you better tell me what you are listening to because as i just said, Woodstock was his only sloppy performance to my knowledge.

Discuss.

EDIT: i do realize that Hendrix isn't the most clean player but i don't find him to be sloppy either.

He is sloppy in a few of his studio sessions, but not most of them. Its on his live albums that he gets a sloppier, b/c of the drugs. Don't get me wrong, I like Hendrix, but he's not my favorite player.

dude he is a sloppy guitar player but he makes it work. whenever he hits a bad note he bends and vibratos and whammys and whatever til its in the right pitch or just sounds amazing.

what live albums are you talking about? that's what i'm trying to figure out.

Just because your sloppy doesn't mean you aint good.
At least in my eyes anyway.

Another Hendrix thread... oh dear. Let's not bring the "e" word in here.

As far as Hendrix goes, I like his songs and rhythm playing, but only a few of his leads do anything for me. I find some of the live videos on youtube to be sloppy, and that the showmanship comes before the playing... which is fine if you're into that sort of thing (I find them fun to watch).

I have become almost obsessed with jimi hendrix over the last few years and i have never decided he was sloppy. His live performances are occasionally sloppy, i.e. having a joint in his mouth while performing, but what i think you are hearing is the way he would never play anything the same. He used several improv methods and runs that we played in tons of different timings that make his music incredible. If you think hendrix plays sloppily than listen closer and you should realize that he is just playing his style where he never playing the same thing twice.

I don't always mind if a player is sloppy, I mean J. Mascis is one of my favorite players.

hendrix's off notes and wammy vibratos (such as those on are you experienced) he used all of these sort of things as uniqueness. When you hear things such as basic blues at the time, this is the most incredible and unique. His techniques were his own

I like the way he's kinda sloppy.

Thats why all these shredding and neo-classical bands bore me, cos' they're so damn tidy.

I remember reading somewhere that after one of the 1969 New Years Eve shows Jimi got complaints backstage from someone important who I can't remember the name of ( ) that his show was all just stage antics and stuff. After hearing that, he went out, cut the stage show and just played.

Is Hendrix sloppy? At times, yes. Is he Jimmy-Page-sloppy? No.

During live performances (because his studio stuff was damn-near perfect), I think Jimi Hendrix is the only man who makes sloppyish playing sound good.

I've been getting into his stuff a lot more recently, and I'm definitely a fan.

And BrainDamage, as hardcore of a Zeppelin fan I am, I guess I can agree about the Page thingy.

I have never heard him play sloppily outside of the studio; I guess his whammy-ing, distortion/effects and crazy bends make people think he is sloppy. But he is definately not Page-sloppy.

Live at the Isle of Wright. I love Hendrix, but he's so drugged up there that I actually intensely dislike this album.

Hendrix was sloppy live. In the studio, not so much (he was a perfectionist one could argue).

I still don't like Hendrix in the least either way.

And there are no exaggerations here. If anything, you're just exaggerating the presence of the exaggerations to justify making a thread for no good reason, to which of course one might argue I'm exaggerating the definition of the word 'good' in this exasperated rant about exaggerations.

you know i don't speak spanish.

He was sloppy, who cares, Page was sloppy, Buddy Guy is sloppy sometimes, Joe Perry is sloppy, everyone is sloppy sometimes, he was more sloppy than most, except page, but that doesnt mean he sucks, it just means that he needed to improve on it, i still love hendrix though, but he was sloppy like just about everyone else, now lets get on with our lives
#33
I think this whole discussion is completely dumb. Jimi Hendrix isn't "sloppy", he just played exactly what he wanted to. He could have played it just like everyone else, perfectly "clean", but he put his own style into it, and made him what he was. Same with Page. He played exactly what he wanted to. You think he couldn't have done it super clean if he wanted to? Give me a break.
#34
Actually, contrary to your lack of observation, he was actually quite sloppy. There are no exaggerations about him being sloppy. He just was. There's no nice way to sugar-coat it. Live performances especially. But, this was during a time where playing clean was not as big a focus, and more people were drawn to the things he was doing with the guitar.

It's no big deal, and it's not like complaining about it is going to change anything.

Since we already involved Page... lets talk about Blackmore too, cause (especially on the Live in Stockholm and Made In Japan) he is not caring about scales or harmony or whatever at all and just throwing around his guitar (like Speed King).
