I feel deep sorrow for you.

And losing a Goddammit album is not funny. It's mournful. It's enough to make me stick on Good Mourning and only listen to Matt's tracks...that's how bad it is.

The fact his songs are so dark and depressing on that particular album. (As opposed to Dan's more upbeat ones)
#126
^Hit the hammer on the nail. Good Mourning was most definitely Matt's darkest album, and while this showed through a bit on Dan's work, he still kept somewhat cheery songs. Although I admit I did like Matt's croaky voice on the album, it was indeed quite dark.

Yeah, I've always been a fan of that song (actually, I've been a fan of all their songs...), and I play it as a cover at gigs occasionally. Still, I don't agree with the above comment. I can never pick favorites, even if it's just on one album. Every songs has it's high points.

That is one of my favourites ever, but thats the thing about this band - people have such different 'favourite' songs.

I just cant belive u dont like Mr. Chainsaw or Steamer Trunk

I mean, yeah, the FHTI album isnt their best

but theyre good songs

Most under-rated songs = 5-3-10-4 + Bloodied Up

I just dont think they get the praise they deserve

How can someone NOT like Cringe?! Let's shun him from our group!

I'm not a big fan of Bloodied Up, but 5-3-10-4 is one of my favorites. Does anybody have any idea as to what 5-3-10-4 is supposed to mean though? "5-3 eyes"?
#134
No apparently 5-3-10-4 is a reference to when Matt was a bike messenger.

His friends number was 53 and they would communicate via walky-talkys or something

i read it somewhere but i cant remember the full story behind it...
Blah.
#135
^I think I read that on song meanings dot com or something. Let me find the link.

Here we go: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=13999

A quote from there:

"I interviewed Matt Skiba yesterday and asked him what this song title meant and he said years ago he was a bike messenger and he had a friend named Virgil who was also a messenger. But over their radios they didn't call eachother by name. So Virgil's call name was 53... and they would go out and have lunch, smoke pot, hang out, or whatever so Matt would call him up and refer to him as "5-3"... and when Virgil called him, Matt would respond with "5-3-10-4" and go meet up with him wherever he was."

Song Meanings is a cool site, but personally I find it more fun to try and figure out the lyrical metaphors and such on your own. There are so many in Alk3 songs, too.

I've always been a fan of metaphors. Last year in English I was "the" ****ing master of them...I had so many theories about the books we were reading it wasn't even funny.

Nah...never really been an english geek....I've just always been good at writing I guess.

Just because I'm good at metaphors doesn't mean I'm good at english in general haha. Last year the grades were not up there....

I guess this is pretty much the Alkaline Trio thread now, so this is the right place to put it...

I dunno if any of you have seen my stuff around (mainly in the Tool thread), or in my sig, but I made this:

I've always loved All On Black. It's one of those songs I can't believe someone actually managed to write...the riffs for it seem so random. I stare at it and think "Man, I wish I could have written that...."

Yeah, All On Black owns. This thread is dying, and that makes me sad, so I'm just posting to keep it alive.
And just to make my post somewhat worthwile, I'd like to pose a question to you:
What did you all think of Crimson? I've heard a lot of people say it was bad and that it was their worst album, but I really liked it. I think it has some of Dan's best work. What did you guys think?

You mean all the the punk kids who are sad they didn't get another Goddamnit, who are upset the band are getting a little deserved sucess (but not enough imo) and 'selling out'. These peoples opinions count for nothing. One thing I still can't understand about Crimson is why 'We Can Never Break Up' was left off - its possibly one of my favourtie Dan songs, perhaps it was a little too upbeat. However its a progression from the early stuff and if they were still writing songs about drink/girls etc people would still slate them for being boring and not moving forward - they can't win.

In short, I love it.
#156
Hmmm

I liked crimson

but I wouldnt say that it was all Dan's best work

I mean, Smoke, I think, is one of his best songs

but I wouldnt compare something like The Poison or I Was A Prayer to his early stuff like Every Thug Needs A Lady or If You Had A Bad Time etc
Blah.
#157
Every Thug Needs a Lady is not one of Dan's earlier songs.

I loved "I was a Prayer," although my favorite song by Dan will still always be the old-school "Message from Kathlene."

And I like Crimson just fine. It seems like it's getting a lot more fans...I run into a lot of people that look at shirt or hoodies I have that says "Alkaline Trio," and they always say they love a song on Crimson, or that they recently got Crimson and loved it.

I don't think it's necessarily their best work, but I can not honestly say that I didn't like any of the songs on it. I just thought a few of the songs didn't shine with the Trio's usual briliance, even though they were still quite good.
