I've recently been asked to put together a Christmas mix by a friend because I "seem like I would be good at that kind of thing". Problem is, I have very little clue as to what to put on it and require a little assistance. They don't necessarily have to be flatout Christmas songs but if they're somewhat within the theme that would be best. I'd like to keep to indie/alternative artists as much as possible, too.

Sufjan Stevens just released a huge xmas compilation. The managers play it a lot at work, and it's pretty good/better then the regular christmas trite usually on in stores.

I seem to remember seeing he put out a Christmas album. Any standout tracks on that one? I don't want to saturate this CD with too much of one artist.

^He does a nice cover of O Holy Night. He also wrote some great songs for it:

'It's Christmas, let's be glad!"
"That was the worst Christmas Ever!"
"Get Behind Me, Santa!"

I absolutely love "Put the Lights on the Tree". It's my favorite in the box set. You should definately check it out.

Don't buy it, download it. He was putting the albums out for free every year before he got big, now he suddenly sells a box set of them. It seems like a bit of a cash in while he's popular, although it is a rather cheap box set for what it has.

Last years alt & indie Christmas radio...

The Beach Boys - Little Saint Nick
SNMNMNM - Father Christmas (The Kinks cover)
Elliot Smith - Angel in the snow
Dean Martin - Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Low - Just like Christmas
The City on Film - O holy blanket
Tom Waits - Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis
Henry Mancini - White Christmas
Summer at Shatter Creek - Christmas song (Mogwai cover)
Kind of Like Spitting - Tyco racing set and a Christmas story fifteen times
Magnet - Let it snow
Mark Gardener (w/ Goldrush) - Snow in Mexico (live)
Sufjan Stevens - I saw three ships
Merle Haggard - I wish I was Santa Claus
Okkervil River - Listening to Otis Redding at home during Christmas
The Walkmen - No Christmas while I'm talking
Lifter Puller - Secret Santa Cruz
The City on Film - Fairytale of New York (Pogues cover)

Manic Street Preachers - Last Christmas (Wham! cover)
Bright Eyes - God rest ye merry gentlemen
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York

Also, got a Christmas album by Aimee Mann today, haven't listened to the whole of it yet, but its nice in a way. Not normally my kind of thing though.

Is there anyway I can download the tracks separately?

There's a thread in the pop-punk/emo forum, although not all the artists are pop-punk/emo. Check that out if you like.

I'm sure if you went to somewhere like elbo.ws and searched there you could probably find a few, but I honestly don't know of anywhere. They used to be zipped folders from what I remember.

As do I. It's probably my favorite holiday song of all time. That was the only song I was really positive about putting on this CD.

Everyone is forgetting the best Sufjan Stevens song from the boxset (although the other ones listed were some of the best.)

The best: "Come On! Let's Boogey To The Elf Dance!"

He also does a slammin' version of 'Amazing Grace'

Mookies Last Christmas - Saosin

I don't even know if that's a christmas song but whatever, I still dig it.
And yeah, not really alt but whatever.

and overall, my favourites are:

Both by Weezer

Christmas Steps by Mogwai.

Teehee. Not really. Despite the name, that's like... Halloween music or something.

I hate when bands make Christmas albums or songs. It's lame.

My favorite Christmas CD is this: http://www.amazon.com/Gift-Acoustic-Offerings-Holiday-Season/dp/B000005P18/sr=1-10/qid=1165945457/ref=sr_1_10/102-9733735-7760112?ie=UTF8&s=music

I'm telling you, it's really good. Acoustic and mellow and oh-so joyful!

Fairytale of New York, definately.

EDIT : I also hear that Jethro Tull made a christmas album that's supposed to be good. Oh, and the OST for A Charlie Brown Xmas is great.

Not really a fan of xmas music. Most of it is sappy shit.

No.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I've made the mix now, though, so you can either keep on with the suggestions and discuss holiday tunes or do whatever.
