Learn Come Clarity solo by In Flames, its a fairly decent solo. Also try out Audioslaves new song Revelations.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

If you're talking about the last solo, thats the one I'm working on now... I've got it down pretty well at the moment. Definitly my favorite ballad solo of all time.

Speaking as a lifelong Def Leppard fan:

"Bringin' on the Heartbreak" from the High 'n' Dry album - full of solos. They were still young at the time, so none is incredibly technical.

"Love Bites" LIVE (studio version SUCKS) - Vivian Campbell plays a sweet outro solo when they do this song live. You'll have to find a boot of it since there are no official live recordings.

"Hysteria" from Hysteria - Probably not what most people expect when they think of Def Leppard. One of their best songs ever.

"Tonight" from Adrenalize - one of their dumbest songs. A cool solo, however.

"All I Want is Everything" from Slang - a great outro solo.

I think that about wraps it up.

Quit being such a rule-following party pooper !

If I were you, I'd go ask this question in the 80's Rock/Shred Forum, they would be better able to help you find solos similar to those played by Def Leppard and Van Hagar. Basically, any hair metal or late 80's rock band will have power ballads and solos that you're looking for.

The best rock ballad solo would have to be 'Stairway to heaven' by 'Led zeppelin' [Of course] without a doubt the second i would say would have to be 'Seasons of wither' or 'Dream on' by 'Aerosmith'
