I like the idea of Darkthrone more than listening to Darkthrone. But A Blaze in the Northern Sky is good every couple of months.

No, the riffing and other stuff is punk style. Regardless, it blows the big one. It's a shame that Darkthrone, along with other more 'popular' Norwegian black metal bands like Emperor, Satyricon, etc, descended into the abysses of shitty overproduced poppy metal.

LOL!
Emperor and Darkthrone are "poppy"?
#45
Emperor went kinda mainstream and over-produced, but Darkthrone...? And poppy?

Under A Funeral Moon (the song) has some of my favorite black metal riffs.

And I absolutely <3 Too Old, Too Cold.

I don't know too much Darkthrone, but I just heard the song Transilvanian hunger and I really liked it. I compared that with Graveyard Slut from their newest release...

I still can't say that progressive, rather technical, black/death is anywhere mainstream or poppy.

I dunno... you'd have to go into definitions of mainstream

Like Cannibal Corpse aren't mainstream per se, but they are by metal terms, see what I mean?

Darkthrone are brilliant, the ONLY band playing proper black metal anymore. The new album is a classic. But it's not for young ears. 'Canadian Metal' is song of the year!

This is how they sit in my not at all humble opinion:

1. Under A Funeral Moon
2. A Blaze In The Northern Sky
3. Transylvanian Hunger
4. Ravishing Grimness
5. Total Death
6. The Cult Is Alive
7. FOAD
8. Sardonic Wrath
9. Plagueweilder
10. Panzerfaust
11. Hate Them
12. Soulside Journey
13. Goatlord

but they're all great. how many bands have a fantastic 13th best album!?!
#52
There is no way I could listen to Transilvanian Hunger all the way through. Every song is the same beat as the last one.

I used to be very anti black metal. But I'm quickly starting to get into it. My favorite black metal is Drudkh, Dark Funeral, Burzum, Mayhem, Bathory, and of course Darkthrone.

But enough about me lets discuss Darkthrone. I searched and didn't find anything. I'm currently listening to Transylvanian Hunger.

Funny, you and I are in a very similar situation.

anyway Darkthrone, good stuff.

FOAD is the worse thing to ever happen to black metal, seriously when my friend showed me it, it literally hurt my ears. Darkthrone is dying if not already dead my friends.

"Total Death" is an underrated classic. Some really necro riffing and vocals throughout. "Blackwinged" is genius.

Mainstream?!

Prometheus is probably the toughest album to get into by them. The earlier albums(with the exception of IX Equilirbium) is much more easy-listening for those who already are into black metal. This is a bs statement.

I wouldn't call Wrath Of The Tyrant easy listening. They got more polished as they went along. Plus they streamlined, cleaned up their image.

Still, this is a Darkthrone thread. And any calls that they got more polished or mainstream with time is utterly absurd. They're last 4 records "Hate Them", "Sardonic Wrath", "The Cult Is Alive" & "FOAD" are 4 of the most downtrodden, filthy, mongrel sounding records you'll ever hear.
#63
Just because they don't wear make up and made their cds sound better doesn't make the music more accessable. Prometheus is the most complex work they ever put out and that my friend means that it isn't anywhere near being "mainstream". Don't judge music on the shallow things like production and image.

edit: it is definetely more easy to get into for people who already are into black metal, not easy-listening in a way that everybody can like it.

Actually having a light-heated discussion about Darkthrone at the moment over at the Metalshop forums.

All Darkthrone wins, and the punk influence in the new stuff is really doing it for me these days.

Hello? If I say an album is more mainstream, then I mean it must be more accessible to people who DON'T listen to BM.

Anyways, I need to hear the new DT stuff.

Then don't use the term "mainstream", it's wrong. There's nothing mainstream about Prometheus what-so-ever.

Yeah, because clean production and symphonic elements will not appeal more to metal newbz.

My Darkthrone collections fairly growing these days. Transilvanian Hunger has to be my favourite though, has some quality songs. Like Varg's input as well.

I kind of find Transilvanian Hunger repetitive. For me it's A Blaze, then Funeral Moon, then TH.

that's a fair stretch to call anything on Blaze 'punk'. I mean of course you can get pedantic and say all metal boils down to the blues when you trace it back blah blah. but really, there's nothing remotely punky about A Blaze. all I hear is some serious Bathory & Celtic Frost influence in that album.
