What's a good amp to get if I have a band that does little gigs at clubs?
#2
Well what is your price range, what kind of music do you play? You cant just say "amp for gigs" cause that's too general.
Epiphone Goth Les Paul Studio
Ibanez SA120
Peavey Raptor EXP
Takamine Electric Acoustic
Boss CS-3
Boss DD-6
Boss TU-2
Boss MT-2 (For use with my Vox)
MXR M-108 10-Band Eq
Dunlop Crybaby Wah
Peavey JSX Head
Vox AD50VT
#3
Well i play very heavy extreme metal like Thrash and Death. And my price range is all the way up to $550
#7
I have a fender blues junior, I picked it because I think it's loud enough for small venues and doesn't weight that much so it can be portable(though I have not use it on stage). But if isn't you can also mic it, but if you want to go on the safe side maybe a fender hot rod delux or mesa boogi F-30 or something.

MG= crap. For the spider, ive heard some metal heads that dig it and some that dont. I think it sounds way too digital.
#12
I I've heard that too. I really need the fest I can get froms the $350 - $500 range.

Isn't only the bonus stuff digital? What if you just jam like you would with a normal amp?

Okay i want a good metal amp thats over 100W in the $400 range

Now why do you want 100w?

Any specific reason?
ever player a 100w metal amp?
Compared it to a 50w, or a 150 w, or a 30w, and picked it over the others?

You relize that 100w is hardly much louder than a 50w...
hell its only twice the volume of a 10w.. so its not that much louder..
especially if you're gonna be mic'd.

also note: you're not gonna get a "good" metal amp thats over 100w at $400
look at lower wattage, combos, and used amps..

Then youve basically cut yourself off from a lot of really good amps...

For the money youve got, youll pull off a sub-par B-52 or an Ashdown. But not much more.
#21
The thing is...Even though Line 6 is too digital, I can save a lot of money from buying stuff for special effects.

+1.

Why don't you want to get a used amp? You can get REAL good amps for a cheaper price. It's not the looks that matters, it's the tone.

Btw, 5150's go for 500$ used?

Oh fellow UG-er, even though it's too digital you can save money on special effects?

Let me tell you, I tried a spyder and I thought it played awesome...until I played a cube 30...then a tube marshall amplifier. Seperate effects > multi effects.

Also, I'm not sure if you developed an ear for tone yet, but once you do, you'll regret getting the line 6. Get something you'll be happy with...for a while /.

Where can I get used amps?

Just stop by a local pawn shop, guitar dealer, ebay, etc.

Remember to try out the amp before you buy it, you could always catch yourself a bad lemon.

Any local music shop. Guitar Center should have a lot. eBay. Craigslist. the newspaper. You can put like "Amp Wanted" flyers up at your local shop. Theres tons of way to get a really nice, inexpensive amp. Just gotta look! lol
#29
Okay thx.

I was just wondering though. If you use the Spider III without any effects, would it sound real?

Hmm, what do you mean?

To me, after playing the spyder II...it seemed that the whole amp felt digital!

I never tried a III, but I think some people here could help you

Everything you hear from a Spider is fake. Its a digital modeling amp. Basically all it does is emulate the sound of more famous amps (Marshall JCMs, Mesa Rectifiers, Vox ACs, etc.). But it does this very poorly.
#34
A used tube amp is the way to go on your budget. Or the Ashdown or B-52. Don't get hung up on wattage, 40W of tube should be more than sufficient. It'll generally be louder than a 100W SS amp.

And if you're looking at hybrid amps, just stop and look for the real thing instead. You'll be glad you did in the long run.
You Don't Need a halfstack.

You Don't Need 100W.
