how do those marshall handles compare tonewise to, say, mesa handles?

heat it up, get rid of the most with a knife or something, and then sand of the rest
#6
Sand paper, and when you're done using the iron, put some solder on the tip....
#7
Switch it on and use a pan scourer or wire wool to scrape the crap off
#8
steel wool would heat up when it comes in contact with the iron and get incredibly hot...

I don't recommend using steel wool

The best way and the way everyone "in the know" does it is with a wet sponge. If you have a soldering station (I do), there is a spot for a sponge you wet and just wipe the tip on that. You use the sponge a lot, before you tin the iron and after you make a connection to clean the flux from the tip so it doesn't cook onto the tip.

Burning yourself with a soldering iron doesn't even hurt.

Partly because you burn the nerve ending right off... Leastways, that's what happened when I was studying Electronical Engineering a couple years back.

It's not reccomended, though.

You could always buy a new tip, and use that one to groove picks.

No, it hurts all right.

The only time it didn't hurt was when I stepped on it, and that was because of the callouses on my feet. It managed to make my sock brown and crispy, though. You are probably wondering why it was on the ground in the first place: I always put it on the ground when I won't be using it for a few minutes (and I leave it plugged in), so it can't fall off the table onto my lap or anything flammable. That time I managed to forget it, and not see it.

But yeah, it probably doesn't hurt if you stab yourself with it.

I usually just keep a wet paper towel with me when I use a soldering iron. Just heat it up and wipe it off.

Be careful though, I've "missed" the paper towel and ended up grabbing the tip of the iron when it was very hot. I don't care what anyone says, that DOES hurt.
