i've seen 4 ohms and 8 ohms.....but what the hell are they....what do they mean...and what do they do?

Its a measurment of impedance or resistance in electrical current. All you need to know is that for amps is with
1) Two cabs of the same impedance are hooked up the ohms are halved (8+8=4 ohms).

2)When a head says 300 watts @ 4 ohms or whatever if you have a 4 ohm cab (two 8 ohms) it will push out 300 watts. If you have an 8 ohm cab it will most likely pump out only 150 watts. if you have a 2 ohm cab it could pump out close to 600.

I think thats about it.

Many amps will specify a minimum number of ohms they can pull so if you connect cabinets rated lower than the specification you will fry the amp, so it is a good idea to check the ratings.
