^^those would be bass strings. .009 (the correct guage, actually) makes bending and playing faster easier than with heavy strings.

opinion. i use 9's on all my guitars, and they sound just fine. i dunno what your problem with them is. it's not better or worse, it's just different. i've tried 10's, and they just seem too heavy. i do lots of bending and blues type stuff, and they work great for that.
