so we were praticing, everything went well, we were packing up, talking about amps, one of my mates said "why dont you get a small guitar amp and big bass amp" and i replied "thats what im doing, im getting the 20w Ashdown, then saving for a 65w Bass Amp" then my other friends is like: "65?!?! you only need 30, if we're using 30w" and im like "i need twice as much for people to hear what im playing" and hes like "no you dont" then i could jus said F You but i didnt, anythoughts on this reallllly pointless post?

In all honesty I hate practicing at high volumes, it just stresses the hell put of me. I've always asked my bandmates if we can play the least noisy (most drummers don't understand that concept, but thank god for the ones that do).

Part of really meshing as a band is the ability to listen to the rest of the instruments and hear what they are doing. I'm like you, if every one is cranked to the max, I find it really hard to do that.

The rule of thumb is actually 4 times the power of the guitarist's amp, not 2.

And yeah, band practices should always be at lower volumes. You need to be able to hear everybody playing so you can figure out what to play at different points in the song. It's also helpful to be able to talk to your bandmates to share ideas, etc.

turn the volume on your bass down a little and when you start playing sneakily turn it up to full. no one will realise apart from you and they wont know as they wont see you go to your amp.

schweet

^might do that on my Zoom. just rock it back a bit and have it on high on the amp, and then push the pedal up to full

either that, or just keep switching to the synth, which is like twice as loud

get a 2000 watt amp with volume on FULL
put it in a sound proof room
get a REALLY long lead and plug it in
put a hole in the door just big enough for the lead
go to a remote location with your lead pluged to your bass
tell your bandmates you are having practise in there
when they go in slap the E string

BANG

Nah, build a replica of the 51" diesel-powered subwoofer they made on Mythbusters, then lure them near it. 162 dB at 15Hz...silent death!

Either get a bigger amp just to spite them, or leave the band

Ah it sounded like he was a bass noob, I understand cracking jokes but I wouldn't exactly want to say F you to someone that's ignorant, I doubt he knew bass amps were supposed to be louder.

Why don't you direct him to the bass forum so we can set him straight. Maybe if he hears it from dozens of other musicians he'll be convinced.
