I think stone is either 7 or 14 lbs

Edit I'm gonna go with 14 because it's rather unlikely you're 56 pounds

If you're writing metal/prog epics that sound awesome then I don't think you're taking too much time

If you're writing simple 3-chord esque songs then you are

I don't care if you have a 3 chord power pop song or a Prog rock song with 100-piece orchestra accompaniment, take as much time as you need to. The important thing is that you have the best song possible. Also don't forget you can write a song in a month.. perform it for awhile, and rewrite it if you need to. I've shelved songs for months at a time and came back to it when the time was right. Remember that 90 percent of GOOD songwriting is rewriting. I also remember reading a story about someone who in the 70's, had a number 1 hit song on the charts that he hated. The reason being, he was being rushed to finish it and he claimed that if he had worked one section out more.. it would have been 10x better. At that point, we are getting into artistic needs but it's something to keep in mind.

Now if you are taking a month to write a BAD song, then you need to change your process a little bit. Maybe do some exercises, change your writing location, or bring it outside co-writers. I don't know why some bands are so against bringing in outside writers. Maybe they are embarrased.
I was once heavily prominent on these forums from 2004-2007, let's see how long I can stay now that I'm back.
