Apple launched a new gadget today, the iPhone, dunno what to make of the idea of having a customisable touch screen instead of normal buttoms, but 8gb of music + phone in one box sounds good for those already carrying an mp3 player plus their mobile.

Apple's 'magical' iPhone unveiled

US firm Apple has confirmed its move into the telecoms industry, unveiling the long-awaited iPhone.
Users will be able to download music and videos with the phone, demonstrated by Apple boss Steve Jobs at the annual Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
Mr Jobs praised the phone's design and told the audience the "magical device" would "revolutionise the industry".

The phone, which will cost from $499 (£257) to $599, will be launched in the US in June and Europe later this year.

Apple is not yet saying how much the iPhone will cost in the UK, but using the comparison of a Mac mini computer the 4 gigabyte (GB) model would be about £335.

Also revealed at the Macworld Expo was Apple TV, a device to stream music and movies from a computer to the living room.

'Super-smart'

The announcement ended months of speculation about the iPhone, which has no conventional buttons but instead uses a large touch-screen.

The firm has patented keyboard technology on the 11.6mm thick phone, calling it "multi-touch".

It is essentially a computer with a blank screen that users configure so they can operate the monitor with their fingers.

^^ The phone is double sided, so you have to worry about taking care of the two screens more.

A lot of original ipods are somewhat defective even up to this date. This phone is going to run into a lot of problems. I can feel it.

why the features. phones are going from a useful device to something that's going to get you killed. i'd hate to try and dial 999 if i injured myself and somehow got into all my music and shit.

old skool phones ftw.

Double sided?! Have the designers actually thought about how that's going to end for thousands of people? What a ridiculous concept.
The thing I find strange is the publicity they seem to be getting for this phone and the streaming thing. Maybe its just me, but there's been a walkman phone over here for at least a year now. Not exactly something new. All you're getting with this phone is a bigger memory, which you can upgrade on that walkman phone anyway but just buying a bigger chip. Also, this streaming thing, anyone ever heard of Sonos before? Although that is only for music, its effectively the same thing. And even I have this thing lying around the house that's made my Pinnacle that does exactly what this Apple gadget is meant to do. Their ideas aren't exactly original, but somehow they manage to get a ton of interest. Why? Because Apple is a phase. Since their hit with the iPods they've been trying to become too big for their boots. There are now viruses for Apple Macs, their equipment is now faulty and they are unoriginal in their ideas.

I won't be buying it. It simply wouldn't be useful for me, sure having the ability to go on the net would be handy but i'm never more than half an hour away from a computer at present. The storage is too small for me to consider ditching my current iPod.

I need a phone that can take some abuse, I don't constantly want to worry about breaking it.

Plus, i'd rather put that money to something for my guitar anyway.

It's a pretty stupid concept. Apple puts too much thought into all these stupid new gadgets and shit that are completely and utterly useless. But, of course, just like the iPods, everyone who is fashionable and trendy and ****-all are going to want one.

Seriously. A phone motion sensor?
Un-needed.

I reckon Apple could probably do quite well with some form of set top box for your television, akin to the Tivo, but also linked with film/tv programme purchasing. Only if it didn't need keyboards and mice, but just a standard remote.

That would be nice

Whats the big thing with touchscreens? sure they look cool, but you can't beat real keys for reliability and effectiveness...

Is it just me, or does anyone else not want a 'unifying' device? Instead of a phone/music/portable porn combo, oh thats right, don't call it a phone company, don't call it a phone, its a 'helio'. No, I want a music player, a phone, and a computer; Trying to tie all together at this point in technology will end in tears. 50 years or whatev you'll be able to plug shit directly into your brain, mark my words, and then, only then, will a multi-device be useful, because you don't need a damn entertainment center cord collection sticking out of your spinal cord now do you?
