I have a Roland Cube 30 with the cosm modeling, and I want to get a distortion pedal, but I've heard the amp's modeling already sounds as good as some pedals. So is it worth the money to buy a pedal? I'm looking for a metal sound, like metallica or disturbed or something

sorry i don't know much about anything, but would I still use the distortion on the amp in addition to the pedal, or use the clean channel? Or is that up to preference

you'd have to use the amp's clean channel. Personally i think the amp's distortion will be better than what a pedal will give.
