Hello all.

Before I pose my question to you guys, allow me to apologise for another 'what guitar' post. I think the reason there are so many is because each individuals requirements are different, and so one thread cannot tailor everyone. Hence the reason I come to you with another.

Now then, I have approximate 300-350 GBP to spend (approximate 500 EUROS, or 700 USD). I'm not sure how far this amount will go in the respective countries.

With the power of the pound against the dollar, I am considering to purchase from america, as this will save me money. However, there are a few issues:

a) I need to find someone who will ship to the UK without charging extortionate fees
b) perhaps insurance so that any damage caused during delivery is covered. (the worst thing would be to spend a handsome chunk of money, only to see it ruined by the delivery)
c) I need to know what guitar I'm getting.

I have narrowed down my list to a few guitars that I like the look of, and that have had good reviews. They seem to fit in perfectly with the sound I'm after from reviews and what have you.

I know I should try before I buy, but it's really not feasible for me to do so. If I can save myself a good 200 pounds buying from abroad (which is what I can looking at some of the american prices) then it's not something I can seriously turn down.

I am a student after all

The type of stuff I play is oasis (loads ), bit of rhcp, and a couple of others, but any guitar I get HAS to be able to do oasis.

I'll running it through a marshall.......(don't shoot me)..... MG100DFX. I shall also be running it through a Zoom 707 II pedal.

I will be looking to upgrade that at some point, but at the moment a guitar is what I need.

So, now to the different guitars.

1) The epiphone les paul - preferably plain top due to it being full mahogany. The standard can be found for 275 GBP from Thomann. I haven't been able to find the plain top for less than 400 GBP

2) The EJ 300S - The acoustic, for 280 GBP from Thomann.

3) Alternatively - Buy a SX GG5 Custom Semi-Hollow from rondomusic for a customisation project, and use the remaining cash on an Agile AL-3000 CSB P90. Both these will come up to approximately 300 pounds with a bit more for postage.

One thing about rondo music that concerns me is the fact that it says under showroom opening hours : showroom is now closed.

My dad has said he'll pay half of whatever, which is very nice of him.
So as you can see, I am faced with a dilemma.

If you guys could give me some opinions on what you would do in my shoes / any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and no 'G3T AG1L3 - T3H S3X!!!1one!1eleven' please. If you make an opinion about a product or service please back it up.

Thanks kindly for your time, effort in reading this long post, and in advance for any replies I get.

Regards,
Hemant

I looked into buying from America a year or so ago (i'm also in the uk), and i found after shipping, VAT and i think there's handling charges, that it just wasn't feasible buying from abroad, (although i know how u feel, with the exchange rate, everything appears very cheap).

As far as the guitar, the epiphone standard is a pretty good choice. Also the Yamaha AES620 has a very good spec for similar money.

You're right, just about the only thing better than a Spider 3 is an MG : )

Yeh - fair point.

I did hear that rondomusic were not overly against sending as a gift item so as to avoid taxation etc?

The rondomusic idea does really appeal to me at the moment.

Thanks for the reply

i bought a strat in the USA and carried it back with me on the plane, so no shipping charges. however, UK customs (i am honest, and besides didn't want to risk having my beautiful new strat confiscated) charged full VAT (17.5%) plus import duty of another 6%.

so, as said above, it isn't really feasible.
I've been imitated so well I've heard people copy my mistakes.

can ya specify you're taste in music better? since i guess you like oasis a lot, i really would try out some epiphone semi hollows, the best guitars epiphone makes IMO, or if you're into heavy stuff too, get the les paul, great guitar....

Ok - sorry, wasn't as elaborate on that as should have been

Erm, I play oasis, so like britpop style rock, punk, indie stuff, blues, rhcp, beatles, clapton. I play minute amounts of metallica as well, but am trying to learn new stuff all the time.

Something that could fit the bill for most things. I'm not massive on heavy metal or anything like that. Semi hollows look like a good bet.

If I've left anything out that may help, please give me a shout

Thanks again

Man the semi hollows are perfect for you, i REALLY REALLY raccomend those epiphone's...they are GREAT guitars, especially for the style's you listed above

BTw: stay away from cheap semihollows, they might seem pritty but they usually suck ass

Check out an Ibanez SZ; they'll give you more bang for your buck than an Epi. They can play anything from RHCP to metal with a good amp.

Thanks for the replies so far guys

Buying from UK means I'll have a longer wait while I save. What are opinions on the riviera?

http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?ProductID=6&CollectionID=1

Or there is the sheraton II - however, being the shallow individual that I am, I'd like it in a different colour - which isn't supplied.

http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?ProductID=8&CollectionID=1

Does anyone know how much it would cost to get a good paint job done?

thanks

i would stay away from rondo music. im sure there are better guitars in the uk by the time u pay all the extra shipping, that is if u can even get it.

epi make excellent semi hollows. casino plays great, a little feedback, but nothing u cant work around.

ur main problem is ur amp.
take it from a former MG owner.

guitars lose their soul thru an mg. especially when ur not playing typical mg metal-ish music.

if u play mostly lighter classic stuff, ull notice the biggest tone change, by saving a little on the guitar and picking up a a small tube amp like the $100 USD epi Valve junior.
if u get the head, u can mod the mg to use as a cab. use it for loud home use.

anyway. i like epi casino, dots, and ibanez articores. in this price range.
