Ok I've been debating this with myself for about a month now...And i would like to know what picking style is best to learn, i know people usually say personal preference but what style actually works best,

is it Alt picking, or eco picking, or is there another way to pick also?

please can somone give so insight to this stuff it would be greatly apprechiated.

economy. like alternative, just that more efficient.
may take a while to make it a habit. but it's worth it.
and an easy explanation, no sweep bullshit.
its just like alternative, only that if you go to a higher string you pick up, if you go to a lower string, you pick down.

all that "its like sweep" explanations can make yoda confused

Yeah, it depends on the song, or even what kind of sound you wanna get out of it.

Overall though, probably eco picking.

Alternative picking first, then learn to economy pick.

Well I mainly use alt picking but it really depends on the song passage.

IMO you should learn them both...depending on what you're going to play you will most likely need to use both.

I prefer fingerpicking.

Trem Picking if you can get used to it is quite useful.

how long does it take to master eco picking?

Depends on how much work you put into it. Everyone is different.

So are there any good lessons around that can teach me eco picking/alt picking?

Picking as fast as you can when playing a part. There's a part like that in eruption.

+1! I just can't get the consistancy in sound yet. I'm only a novice though...

Finger picking for acoustic, and a mixture of Economy and plain down picking for electric. Down picking with a nice bassy tone makes for some phat riffage.

Tremelo picking is just picking one note in quick succession; basically a trill.

Alternate versus economy picking...I'd go with alternate. Economy really just minimizes the movement of the right hand, saving a bit of muscle tension, but it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference when playing blistering solos. So, it really depends on what kinda' music you're playing. Slower tempo'd songs, I find myself doing economy picking instinctively, while the quicker ones I'm either strictly down-picking (bless you, James Hetfield) or when soloing, alternate picking the Hell out of the strings.

I use economy and alternate picking, but I think I'm partial to alternate picking. It's good to have a good knowledge of both, because you'll probably need them both at some point.

Economy picking is a style developed sort of as a combination between sweep picking and alternate picking. You alternate pick notes on individual strings until you change strings, where you sweep to the next string and resuming alternate picking or sweeping as needed.

I actually can't alternate pick properly anymore... i eco pick without really thinking about it.

lets see if these tabs work
the upper picking pattern is straight alternate picking, and the lower one is economy

u = upstroke with plectrum
d = downstroke with plectrum

e:-8-7-5---7-5-----5---------------
B:-------8-----8-7---8-7-5-8-7-5---
G:-------------------------------7-

---d u d u d u d u d u d u d u d u <- Alternate
---d u d u d u U d D u d u d u d u <- economy

G:-------------------5-7-9-
D:-------------5-7-9-------
A:-------5-7-8-------------
E:-5-7-8-------------------
---d u d u d u d u d u d u <alternate
---d u d D u d D u d D u d <economy

economy is just alternate picking that makes changing strings easier. i capitalized the unusual up or down strokes in the alternate picking pattern.
