If it was buonassera then he would have asked "What does buonassera mean?", wouldn't he now?

I can't help you with the vena part without a dictionary, but has no-one considered that the sera part could be the future third person singular of the verb "to be", as it is, I'm pretty sure, in Italian, Spanish and even French?
