At my university, we are not allowed to use download programmes such as Limewire or Torrents. We use a programme called DC++ which is a hub, but the material is very limited and the university is cracking down on its use.

The university actively block programmes such as Limewire and Torrents, and they moniter everyones usage. They know what websites you visit. They dont block content, but if you are caught looking at pornography or any "explicit or obscene" material we may face "legal" action.

Now my question is, what programmes can I use to "hide" myself from the network so that I can use Limewire and Torrents to download Guitarpro 5 (amongst other things).

I would buy it but the site rejects my cards.... Mainly because Im overdrawn and close to my limit.

Any help appreiciated.

The same thing happens at my university. Although I don't really approve of downloading, you could use a different proxy server.

There are sites that you can use to bypass IP checks but as for monitoring your use they could still see what your doing if they looked carefully.

Download a program called Your Freedom, it'll connect you to the internet through a server in another country and'll get you round the blocking. I've used it to successfully download 25Gb of music / movies at uni. You'll have to pay a small fee if you want to download at better speeds, but trust me, it's worth it.

It'll be something to do with terms and conditions of using the university's network I expect.

Depends on what you view. Child porn nad beastiality is illegal but the university has to have some "moral" backbone and say all forms of obscene material is not allowed. Yet they dont block porn sites. No site is blocked we just have acceptable use guidelines to follow.

The only thing blocked is using p2p software.

Why would I want to drop out? I love it here, unless you are trying to make an underhand comment about my intellegence, which I have no problem admitting is very low. So low that a retarded monkey with a paintbrush can do better at chemistry than I can.

dickhead. dropping out of uni because they monitor your usage is stupid.

you do realise that your phone calls are "monitored" so they know what you're going to be billed. didn't think of that eh? this is exactly the same, but they can scan incoming packets and any that are flagged usually get the techies attention.

1) I agree I can be a dickhead
2) I never contemplated dropping out.
3) I know phone calls are monitored, but this is different. I want to download without getting caught.
4) I have never heard of anyone being arrested for a phone conversation monitered by the phone company. The only arrests I have heard about are when security forces bug phones.

Dude, I'm in the same situation there, don't suppose you go the University of Surrey judging by your Location/Sig? Personally I think DC++ is pretty awesome on campuses.
I haven't really found any ways around the p2p block, whilst I believe you can still download from websites such as rapidshare (http://th3zone.com), my internet connection at Uni is generally really bad, which is what stops me downloading stuff from rapidshare, because of really bad download speeds. I couldn't get any proxies to work, but that might be something to do with my crapness when it comes to stuff like that.
