1. Maynard James Keenan
2. John Frusciante (also an awesome guitarist)
3. Brandon Boyd

Chris Cornell (his lyrics for Audioslave are wonderful) or Serj Tankian (SOAD's ST and Toxicity prove his lyrical mastery -- unfortunately, the latest two feature watered-down lyrics by Daron (with all due respect, love his guitar work, but hate his lyrics))

I would have said Richey Edwards but he doesn't really count because
1: it's modern and he's been suspected 'dead' for like 11 years now
2: not really 'rock' in the sense it's seen as today.

So I'd either have to go with Maynard James Keenan or Brandon Boyd.

zac de la rocha's certainly had a way with words and the lyrics in RATM where awesome

and also worth a mention is Alex Turner im not a big fan of the Arctic Monkeys' music but his lyrics are very catchy, and he has a pretty unique way about em

I think Stephen Malkmus belongs in this 'Best Modern Rock Lyricist' thread.

Brandon Boyd, Maynard James Keenan, Trent Reznor or John Frusciante.

sadistic_monkey has excellent taste in music, he hit that one right on the button.

Nobody's mentioned Kurt Cobain (its cliche and he's old, but where else does Nirvana belong)
His lyrics are great, simple but really poignant
Anthony Kiedis also writes powerful lyrics, especially when he's talking about girls

Run-Of-The-Mill vocalist. Nothing special to his name.

Hmm, Noel Gallaghers written a lot of my favourite lyrics.

Cobain's lyrics were nothing special. Lots of contradictions and puns and sarcasm. Seems like something that would come out of a high school journal or something.
#34
dunno what genre they would fall into, but i think linkin park's lyric are always good, on every song, and you can hate them or whatever, but their lyrics are always so good they spend so long perfecting them, obviously not perfecting them, but to the standard that they are

I like Anthony Kiedis and John Frusciante... I'm not even talking about their lyrics, I just want to marry them both.
Feel free to ignore my ranting.

Eddie Vedder, Thom Yorke, Beck, Frusciante and Kiedis, Kelly Jones, Zack DLR, Chris Cornell, and probably in the wrong place, but the Fratellis lyrics are good. Especially on 'Got Ma Nuts From A Hippy'
