This is true, I got a lot better at bass by continuously playing exercises while watching the simpsons.

For me I always liked the advice "Don't try to use everything you come up with. Don't be afraid to throw away some ideas and keep the best."

speed is nothing that hours of practice cannot accomplish and will eventually come to you anyway. focus on being a musician, not just playing the guitar.

sorry my post was advice i gave but the best advice i've gotten is "Alternate Pick" from my friend who got me into guitar.
#24
"Learn the blues scales."

You can improvise for millennia in cool bluesy tones. And if you add some simple 12 bar blues in the background, even more millennia.

And also to alternate pick from day one. And to play each note clear even if its slow because it sounds a helluva lot better than ultra fast picking where you mess up.

Play something because of what you played before.
Don't compare yourself to others.
Repetition is the glue that holds music together.
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice.

Remember: A prudent question is one half of wisdom.

Click.

Don't drown things in distortion and fuzz. It'll sound cool in your bedroom, but on stage it'll sound muddy and crappy, and it keeps you from seeing your mistakes.

Use a Plectrum! (I started off messing around and I could barely hold a plectrum but the upshot was that I could start off picking using alternate picking from day one)

Practice until you get it correct, then practice until you can't get it worng.

any berklee graduate can play a shred solo at 300 BPM, but a highschool dropout with two broken strings and soul can play a solo that blows them out of the water
#38
Two that have helped me a lot and I only heard recently, both from the Dave Weiner riff of the week videos.

1:Whatever you play, play it with love, and emotion. - Tony MacAlpine.
2:If you want to do something, do it. - Dave Weiner

These have helped me a lot, a hell of a lot really!

why is it that you people think that you gotta play slow to play with emotion?

anyway

Play with a Metronome.
Practice things at speeds which you can play it perfectly, then speed it up one click.
You gotta know the rules (e.g theory) so you know which ones to break!
Vibrato is the unique fingerprint of the guitarist. Work hard on developing it!
