Think of it like this, if a lesbian were truly a lesbian, then why would they use dildos and vibrators?

Black Flag, the Adolescents, the Germs, X, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, Bad Brains

and definitely Sex Pistols

Personally, I think you should listen to the Clash before you listen to anyone else but that's entirely up to you but they are without a doubt required listening and one of the most influential bands (though that's very debatable)

then try "poppier" punk (or as some refer to, "pop punk" but that's debatable)

Bands such as:

Alkaline Trio
Avail
The Lawrence Arms
Kid Dynamite
None More Black (ex members of Kid Dynamite)
Lifetime
Descendents
Bouncing Souls

or you can try older hardcore punk like:

Black Flag
Dead Kennedys
Cirlce Jerks
Minor Threat

and you can try newer, more contemporary stuff like Against Me! or Strike Anywhere and while they're completley different bands soundwise, they're both pretty awesome.

From there check out the maryaid sub genres like Street, Oi and Anarcho and so on and so forth.

But make sure you listen to the more accessiable bands first.

The absolute basics that everyone should listen to at some point in his or her lifetime:

Subhumans
Black Flag
Dead Kennedys
The Clash
Ramones
Sex Pistols

If you're not a punk rock fan by then, there's almost certainly something wrong with you.
