I was wondering if i could get some advice on playing tabs that require you to stretch across many frets. is there a certain technique to doing that? thanks

Some of it might use tapping, other than that, stretch your fingers and practise. But don't overdo it, you could injure something if it's not totally comfortable.

on youtube theres a pretty good lesson for reaching far on the fretboard done by john petrucci, it's bacically:
-15-15-12- -16-16-12|-17-17-12|-18-18-12|
-14-13-13- -14-13-13|-15-13-13|-16-14-14|
-13-14-14- -13-14-14|-13-15-15|-14-16-16|
-12-12-12- -12-12-16|-12-12-12|-12-12-12|
------------- ------------|-------------|------------|
-------------, then ------------|-------------|------------and you keep moving them down the frets
(lower frets = furthur apart= more stretching)

whatever exercise you attempt, just make sure to try it with your pinky and ring finger, because further down the road youll be posting something saying i need pinky strengthening exercises.
