Nick Drake has a ton of awsome songs. Sufjan Stevens is great. Beck's Sea Change Album has some good ones too. Also though you may not like his voice, Bright Eyes has some really great songs. Of course Dylan as well.

Maybe i'm being naive but why would you want to record folk songs if you don't already listen to folk music?

As weird as it sounds, I suggest trying to get some of Charles Manson's music.

who said i didnt already listen to it??

Because of the fact that if you already listened to it you wouldn't need to ask for suggestions here. You'd have plenty of music to record or you'd go to the artists website and see who they thank, or pay homage to.

It's not that difficult to surmise that you don't already listen to folk.

people always ask for song help on this site such as what to play for concerts and stuff so do they not listen to music?

As much as I hate spoon feeding people music, listen to yeahyeah, particularly check out Evan Greer and Ethan Miller.

Woody Guthrie!

Edit: I reccomend that you just watch that 4 hour special made on woodstock, just about every preformer was folk, or covered folk songs and besides that you also get to see one of the best music movies ever.
