What do you guys think of the instrumental guitarist Guthrie Govan? I love his new album Erotic Cakes. His fusion style reminds me of people like Jeff Beck. If you haven't heard him check this out. They don't hvae the best selection of his stuff on Youtube, so this is one of th best thing i could find:

Besides the fact that he has probably the best technique in the world he can write amazing melodies and catchy songs too.

Guthrie > all.

[22:33] ben: Yesterday I was gonna eat a shitload of candy but I forgot.

He has 1 album only, and its pretty new. You can only order it from his website. Buy it. This guy is a ****ing god, and really deserves to get some(ALOT OF) attention.

Rhode Island shred was him an Bumblefoot AFAIK.....

but yeah.. it made my jaw drop...... literally... I fell to the ground after listening to that clip......

but it was probably the lubricator that was spilled all over the floor... yeah that's it.

Listen to his other youtube vids........ Wonderful Sliperry Thing is also "crap-making" !!
Tone is all ...... well probably 75%, in your fingers.
The rest depends on your wallet's thickness !!

Keep the faith, baby!!

He's a pretty original shred guitarist, he has blown away a lot of stereotypes in that genre.

BTW, what is with his "Jebus Beard"? Also, how old is he?

I personally prefer Wonderful Slippery Thing over everything else, but as Govan goes he's phenomenal, the virtuosos virtuoso if you will.

I like Wonderful Slippery Thing the most I think, and Sevens. I really want to know his age, he has a timeless look that you can't tell his age it seems.
I have nothing to put in here.

Great player. I wonder if I should go see him this week.

And aren't there like a couple of other Govan threads?... I'm to lazy to search.

>_>

I purchased Creative Guitar I and II from him, and I have erotic cakes. Literally, I have cakes that are erotic.

Just kidding, I have Erotic Cakes also and I already stated which songs were my favorite. Rhode Island Shred is good too.
I have nothing to put in here.

Oh dannnngggggg, that's good stuff. I joined his forum, yay. I'm really getting into his playing lately, the Creative Guitar books are really useful and I like the backing tracks at the end with the demos, very useful.

Great and all as Guthrie is...

He has been playing for 30 years. If he wasn't able to put together an absolute blinder of an album after 30 damn years, I'd think something was disgustingly wrong. I'm wondering what the follow up will be like.
My name is Tom, feel free to use it.

His playin with Asia is meh though.......... but EROTIC CAKES !! OMG !!!
Tone is all ...... well probably 75%, in your fingers.
The rest depends on your wallet's thickness !!

Keep the faith, baby!!

I don't like him. Sure, he has good techniques, but his songs just can't hold my attention. The only song on his album that really caught me was Eric. Other than that... boring.
#22
Met him several times. Also been in a guitar masterclass with him before. Lovely down to earth man.

He's a very good guitarist, that's a FACT

Don't mix up musicianship with guitar playing, cause his technique is at a Very high level, musicianship is opinion;

He composes some nice stuff which is again another aspect;

Unless your ear is lying or ya don't know what good technique is...

Wait, are you saying that the first album is good or bad to you?
Actually, to be honest, I don't that it's that great of an album especially after playing for 30 years and this being his first, should be most original, album. It just doesn't provoke that much emotion to me, seems like there could have been much more. Not to get me wrong, I still love it, it just doesn't have the vibe I like.

Like all the greats, he shines when improvising, imo.
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice.

Perhaps that's true. I was listening to the back track demos in his Creative Guitar 1, and I noticed that the lydian mode sample he does sounds very, very similar to Vai, probably just the lydian mode part of it making it seem so, but not really... interesting.

I've never thought that those sound like Vai at all... meh. Anyone else really like the song Ed? The chorus is awesome.

Haha I commented on his Vai-ness on SU a while back. Does seem a bit that way, but it can't be helped and its just similarities after all...

There's lots more Carl Verheyen in there than there is Vai.
