Ok so I am about to sand and repaint a guitar for the first time and read that I need to put a sealer on the wood? Is this sealer or primer and what kind would you suggest?

They're the same thing, they both do the same thing. Either or, it's up to you. Personally, I like to 'seal' the wood with 4-6 coats of clear, and then start my painting. I consider primer the same thing as basecoat, so usually after sealing i'll spray my basecoat color (usually white) and then my color coat & then follow it up with clear.
