If you're in the UK you should be able to find a Laney GH50L in that price range, absolutely terrific amps.
It's a fine line between clever and stupid.

God it seems like Laney gets recommended every amp thread!

^^ he'll be hard pushed to find a cab to go with it in his price range, i'd go with the guy that said a DSL401 and tubescreamer, though for those bands you may not even need the tubescreamer, though that said is nice to have around just in case. i would really reccomend this set up - great for what you want and more modern stuff.

you can get that toneblaster stack at the cost of your dignity.

fine, screw the cheese sandwich if you must...

^2nd hand GH50L's tend to go for around £250-275, and he could easily find a good quality 2nd hand 2x12 cab for the £225-250 change he'd have...

oh k, my bad, i guessed (bad idea i know) that they'd go for more 2nd hand. with £250 he could prob even scrape a half decent 2nd hand 4x12

No worries. Yeah it's shocking how cheap they go for considering how good they are! Then again they're only £399.99 brand new...

I'm sure he could find a 4x12, but he should bear in mind just how much less convenient they are to transport than a 2x12, for arguably not THAT much tonal benefit. I've got into the habit of recommending getting a good quality 2x12 over a worse 4x12.
