its the slack tension as well as playing slap style with some distortion. By slap i mean rather than plucking the strings he smacks them down into the pickups and frets

I read somewhere that he slaps the first 2 strings with his pinky and the last 2 with his thumb.

I heard something similar to this, like he gets a continuous slap thing going on from using both his thumb and pinky.

I do this on OCCASION, but it's very akward and doesn't accomplish much. it just looks good......

super low tuning, fat ass strings, and he has this way of slapping the bass where he uses what looks like his whole hand to just smack the bass.

i like the sound but i dont like how he looks like hes bullshitting bass

Pretty much all of these are wrong.

Yes, it's because he down-tunes, and he drops the mids, but there's much more.

He downs to Drop A or A standard, I forget which. He might even use both. Either way, with his sound, it doesn't really matter where you're playing, it'll still be "clackclackclackclack." Look up some Korn tabs, you'll see he does switch strings, but on the record all you hear is the clacking sound.

So anyway, tune down, yes, drop your mids, and crank the highs and treble for a sharper sound. He might get some natural distortion depending on what kind of head he is using. But there isn't a lot, so don't crank it up.

Lastly, he style of slapping helps too. It pretty much just sounds like he's slapping as hard as he can, so the string is rattling against the fret hard and probable the pickups as well, which adds to the clack-y-ness.

I can, but I don't like the sound it makes.

Pinkies have no tone. That's why they are useless on your plucking hand.

a first day slapper can get a continous slap motion off this "technique", as can non-bassists. Because its wiggling your wristb ack and forth carelessly very fast.

Just saying it was something I did before I ever was asked how Fieldy got so good~~~~!~~~

and now I dont mean to be mean, because, hey, its his thing. But he definately doesn't have a profound technique.

Technique is like character. Using a technique doesn't mean you have technique.

Just because you are a character, doesn't mean you have character.

That was beautiful, Dan. Even though I hate the way Fieldy plays (I think it's a bit of an abomination), he's still managed to do well with it. To each his own.

Take Indies advice, reduce your midrange to zero, slap really hard and you've got it.

Its a technique nontheless. He doesn't just stand there.

thats not technique, thats showmanship

besides, i'd rather be a little less agile in exchange for playing in time
