I started playing guitar during Christmas, that's when I first received an acoustics Ibanez guitar, problem with it is, I have weak fingers(which are growing stronger daily due to practice), tuning(I have an onboard tuner, so I guess that's okay enough), but my major flaw is I don't know how to read tabs. Maybe I should continue to recognize the chords, but how can I read tabs? I've been trying. I am searching myself, no one in the family plays. Hints, advices, ideas? Thanks!

ok so imagine that those are strings (see how theres six?)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
----------4-----------------------------------------------------
----3-------------------------------------------------------------

something like that would mean
you play the 3rd fret on the lowest(E) string followed by the fourth fret on the second lowest(A) string

Thanks so much for the help guys, pastfatalaties, do I hold those together at the same time, and strum?
#7
I got a question, how about strumming? If I understand the tabs, how will the strumming, etc. be read?
#8
Okay, so say your strumming a G major chord (all 6 strings) in TAB, it would look like this:

e|-----3------------
B|-----0------------
G|-----0------------
D|-----0------------
A|-----2------------
E|-----3------------

You would strum all 6 strings and produce a the G major chord. Tada! Normally however, in TAB, you dont strum all the strings, thats a chord, and if a song is composed of chords, then someone writes out a chord progression; and gives you chord diagrams. Such as:

So, there you go. Hope I helped.

Are you asking about timing?

Tabs don't generally show that, you have to just work it out yourself.

Sorry about the bump, so thank you all for the generous help that has been given. If the TAB is like this:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
----------4-----------------------------------------------------
----3-------------------------------------------------------------

I hold 4 first or 3?
#11
you play the sixth string on the third fret, followed by the fifth string on the fourth fret. However you want to finger it is up to you.
#13
The 3.

read from left to right.

There are a lot of guitar players out there and most of us are quite friendly people. Seriously, I am no great guitar player only been playing 5 years but what really helped is having a mentor, someone who will give you the odd few free lessons. Unfortunately my mentor moved to Australia, (fortunatley none of my other friends have moved away so its not me).

You can always advertise to start up a band that puts you in touch with a lot of potential musicians.

Seriously, wtf does that have to do with this thread at all?

Another question, sorry about being such a pest:

e|-----3---1-0----------3--|
B|---------------1------1--|
G|----0--0-----0------0----| X 2
D|-------------------------|
A|--3----------------------|
E|------------------1------|

What does it mean? I know A3 is first, but the 0, what does that mean?

An open string, unfretted.

That looks like a finger picking song, what is it?

0 is open string, 1-24 is the fret position on a particular string.

X's are mutes.

I think you should look in the beginners lessons section. It'll be so much easier as it's all written down.

Secondhand Serenade - Vulnerable(I think). Looks like I need to know what 'open string' means, I'm guessing it means I am not touching the string.

Can someone pls tell me how to play this:

D||----------------------------------------||
A||----------------------------------------||
F||-13/-14\-13---13---13/-14\-13---13--10--||
C||----------------------------------------|| <-------------------- ???
G||-11/-12\-11---11---11/-12\-11---11---8--||
D||------------0-----------------0---------||
A||----------------------------------------||

I know how to slide and everything,but the middle,theres nothing,so do i have to mute the middle one like this:

E---------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------
G-10-10--10/8 /7/ 8-----------------------------
D--x--x--- x/ x/ x/ x-----------------------------
A--8--8--- 8/ 6/ 5/ 6-----------------------------

It really bugs me,cause i cant just play the 3rd and 5th string,cause then i am eventually gonna hit the 4th string ....???

this forum is for question about the forum and website, not guitar. try the guitar & bass basics forum, or tab talk.
