Never listen to anyone who says not to learn theory. Every so often the guys have to run some guy out who goes on about how "music theory is bad just play what sounds good". Learning Theory is a means of learning just what sounds good and makes everything easier.

my best advice: learn every note on the guitar. master it. then learn your key signatures. improvising will come easily (the most valuable skill a guitarist can have IMO)

Learn about chord construction. It is so cool to just know what chord/what notes you want to get the right sound instead of fiddling around for hours looking for it.
