I'm going to start this thread off by saying that I just fucking hate Gateway. Now, with that out of the way...

About a month ago, I made a purchase. I bought a new computer, made by Gateway. It was a sorta neat computer, good specs. Once I purchased a new graphics card I was able to use it for gaming. What's the problem you ask?

I went into the other room, to play some guitar. I left the computer on, at the desktop, no programs running. When I went back to play some Oblivion,(awesome game) I noticed my screen was black, and the tower was beeping real slow-like. Sort of like R2-D2 on drugs. My first thought was that there was a problem with the monitor. So I went down to the basement and brought back the monitor from my old computer. The thing weighs a good 80 or so pounds, carrying it up two flights of stairs was no easy task. If my life were an RPG I would have gained +20 strength.

I plugged the old monitor in, no dice. I went back downstairs and fetched my old computer, made by eMachines at some point in 2001. It's not even able to run the third world country version of Windows Vista, but I'm able to connect to the interwebs just fine.

So, my question to you, UG, is what do I do now? The computer is slowly beeping, the beep lasts about 1 second, then a 1 second pause, then another beep, the cycle goes on. I tried the Windows Restore disk that came with the PC, but nothing happened. Anyone here that's good with computers who can help me?

Well, if the tower is beeping, It's Not The Monitor.
How long has it been doing this?
Have you plugged it in/out?

It started doing this about three hours ago, I haven't tried plugging it in and out yet, so I guess I'll give it a shot. Dunno if it'll do much good though.

Probably it overheated, you might have fried your vid card or something.

Yeah if it's a brand new PC, overclocked, you'd need some SERIOUS coolant action to keep it running smoothly - heck, I'm using a liquid coolant system and the b!tch still overheats all the way to hell if I try to overclock it.

oh yeah and beeping like that = definitely a hardware fault. Vid cards and CPU's are most vulnerable these days, memory and/or motherboard are also a possibility though far less likely. If it was your motherboard going out, chances are you wouldn't get any bleeps at all. If the motherboard has a built in video adapter on it, try getting rid of the one you bought and connecting to the on board one, see if that makes a diff. If not, probably your CPU is acting funny.

So what do I do temporarily if it's overheated? Take the fried card out? How would I go about switching it back to the integrated graphics?

Edit: Ah. How can I tell that it's overheated? Will it look sorta crispy?

Chances are you won't be able to tell a difference at all And you ust need to put your monitor plug into your integrated vid card's socket I imagine

Update: Plugged moniter into integrate graphics slot, compy sounded like it was starting up as normal. Still no picture, but the part of the plug that goes into the monitor itself wasn't all the way in, no biggie. I turned the computer off again and plugged the monitor in all the way. Beeping again. Same shit as before. I fear that the windows restore disk may have decided to start up and that my turning the pc off may have screwed something up while it was running. I don't know about this stuff, that's why I'm asking here

I too have this problem on our old PC...
I think the Video Card is fried... (That's the problem on our old one...)
it overheated almost immediately when we try to turn it on...
and the monitor on it doesn't start for about 10 - 40 times of turing the PC
on and off in succession if it doesn't start up...
the Vid Card on ours is a GeForce FX5200...

I'm thinking that you've got a fried hardware...
I think it's between the Video Card and the Motherboard

EDIT: it still has it's warranty doesn't it?
and oh for a new Comp?
hmm try to buy a matched one's that are higher on specs...
then maybe add one additional fan or two maybe for cooling...

The beeping is a beep code. Its telling you something, if you still have your motherboard manual it will tell you what the beeps mean. It sounds like the graphics card has came loose or something, so open it up and check to make sure everything is seated correctly.

Yes, the beeping is a code. Look it up and try and find out what it means. The beeps should tell you what's wrong and what needs to be replaced if you can find out what they mean.

alright se heres how it spun down.-

- Nice graphics card, lets call him tom, meets passive motherboard, cpu, and memory, lets call them sarah..

- Tom meets sarah in a bar just after sarah got off work, toms a burly motherfu--er and sarah is skinny as hell.. So yeah good night a few beers and boom, flash to tom's apartment at 2'am they havin a good time, Toms tearin somethin aweful but sarah dont got the stamina so she passes out. She wakes up later, tells her friends she got raped, and Tom gets life.

Aka your Card draw too much (power and memory) from your components, and when they come out of the box OC'd they are on a manual configuration rather than an automatic. After a while the motherboard etc.'s paging cache's cant keep up to what the GFX card is putting out, so it creates a spiraling vaccum of doom that completely jumbles the GFX BIOS around and leads its demise. Your motherboard was beeping for it was draining power into an "empty vessel". The painful truth is that it rebooted a few times before the card fried, its way of saying "HOLY MFEIFAN HELP MEEE IM DYING!!!" but no... you let it die.. shame..
I dont know...

i hate do double post but DO NOT get that. its gfx are ALL integrated, meaning your only possibility would be a PCI card, which i dont think exist anymore... integrated graphics would get you no further than like BF1942

Build one, get all the gear of newegg, ask all of us.. or me before u order it all, and then once you get it ask us or me how to set it up.. simple stuff and easily under 1g.

Whoever was the dumbshit who said it was a cooling issue..... Why in the world would the cooling on a card not be adequate for the frequencies that it came out of the box with? and most hardware will not burn up unless its hit with at least a 15% hit up from the box frequency.... again... shame...
I dont know...

Why do people always ask in the Pit for advice, before calling tech support/a doctor/a specialist/the guitar store etc. ?
Dear God, do you actually answer prayers?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.
