I agree, could just be open G played a couple of frets higher or with a capo.
The recording is probably a dodgy pitch too, being old n all

i believe most of his stuff is in open G. it did though use a capo for different keys. also i heard he tuned his high E to a G instead of a D like normal open G tuning. try that and see if it works. hope that helped.
