Is it simply looking or is there some kind of accepted method?

Spank it, if it moans...

seriously though, put the body in between your feet and look down the neck, you'll see if it's warped

yeah...that's how u check if it's warped....but the neck shouldn't be straight from the nut to where it meets the body. it should have a slight curb that resembles a vibrating string.

Hold your low E string down at the first and last fret. There should be a slight space between the string and the 9th fret. That space is the amount of relief (bow) of the neck. If your neck is too straight you'll get fret buzz. If the neck has too much relief the guitar gets difficult to play.

OK thanks sois there any ways of fixing necks that are too straight or bent? or do you just have to buy a new neck?

At the headstock or the base of the neck is access to the truss rod which reinforces the neck. By loosening (lefty loosey unless you've got a Pedulla) the truss rod you'll increase the relief. If you tighten it you'll straighten the neck (just be sure to loosen a little before you tighten). Don't adjust it more than 1/4 turn to start with, see what that does then do more if needed.

like said, u can adjust it. but you should adjust fret buzz at the bridge first.
if ur having a specific problem you should post what it is.

Jenny needs to sow her wild oats with random Gibsons and Taylors she picks up in bars before she settles down with a PRS.
